Meet the Principal Investigators 

Dr. Lisa M Cohen comes to M3 Wake Research Raleigh from Tampa, Florida where she started her career in Clinical Research. She has experience as both a sub-investigator and a principal investigator over the last 20 years in an extensive array of clinical trials ranging in indications including, but not limited to, endocrine/metabolic disorders, neurology, general medicine, vaccines, and mental health. She prides herself in dedicating her career to drug research development and patient safety.

Dr. Jean Marie Dostou joined M3 Wake Research in 2023. She has experience as principal investigator on multicenter trials addressing diabetes prevention, complications, hyperlipidemia, obesity and various novel therapeutics including immunomodulatory therapies for prevention of type 1 diabetes. Dr. Dostou also maintained a large clinical practice where she enjoyed seeing patients with various endocrine disorders, in particular, those with diabetes. She has been fortunate over the course of her career to witness the benefits of various advances in treatments and technologies on quality of life for her many patients.

Board-certified Gastroenterologist and Hepatologist with Raleigh Medical Group-GI 

Dr. Mitchell Mah’moud is the Principal Investigator of several ongoing clinical trials in IBD, IBS, Celiac disease, and liver diseases, including PBC, NASH, and cirrhosis. Dr. Mah’moud maintains an active practice with focus on liver diseases (including pretransplant and post-transplant care), general gastroenterology (GERD, IBD, IBS, colon cancer screening), and therapeutic endoscopic procedures.   

Dr. Angela Hira has eight years of experience in clinical research with M3 Wake Research Raleigh in various gastroenterology studies.

Shandelle Parker 

Site Director
17+ years of experience in clinical research with M3 Wake Research 

Shandelle has conducted over 200 clinical trials in Phase II – IV with challenging populations in Adult/Pediatric Vaccines, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Psoriatic Arthritis, Ankylosing Spondylitis, Osteoporosis, Dermatology, General Surgery, Postoperative Pain, Cervical/Lumber IDE, Robotic Arthroplasty, Osteoarthritis, Frozen Shoulder, Internal Medicine, and many other indications. 

John Thorp JR, MD

Sub-investigator

Dr. John Thorp has over 35 years of exceptional clinical, research, and academic service for which he has received numerous honors. He is well regarded nationally and locally in the obstetrical community. His areas of research include preterm birth, cervical insufficiency, nutrition in pregnancy, health disparities, alcohol and drug abuse research, outreach education, and clinical trials.

Priti Patel, APRN, FNP-C

Sub-investigator

Priti Patel is a family nurse practitioner with over 3 years of clinical research experience and previous ER and hospice experience as a RN. She has experience as a sub-investigator in studies ranging from phase I-IV in a variety of indications including vaccines, women’s health, endocrine, neurology, GI, rheumatology,  and dermatological studies.

Haiyan Xiao, PhD, DNP, FNP-C

Sub-investigator

Dr. Haiyan Xiao holds a PhD in Immunology and is a certified Family Nurse Practitioner. With over 15 years of biomedical research experience, she has authored or co-authored 30 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals. Additionally, she has more than 3 years of clinical research experience, contributing to Phase 2 and 3 clinical trials across orthopedics, endocrinology, and general medicine.

Molly Leatherland, APRN, WHNP-BC

Sub-investigator

Molly Leatherland is a women’s health nurse practitioner in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. In addition to clinical practice, she is a sub-investigator and research instructor in women’s health studies. Additionally, Molly received awards for creating exceptional experience for patients.
